A Brief History of Women’s History Month

Women’s History Month started in California. In 1978, a group called the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women created a “Women’s History Week”. They chose the same week as International Women’s Day on 8th March.

The idea grew quickly. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter announced the week of 8th March as National Women’s History Week across America.

In 1987, the US Congress made the celebration last for the whole month of March. Since then, every US president announces March as Women’s History Month each year.

The UK started celebrating Women’s History Month more recently. People in the UK already celebrated International Women’s Day for many years before this.

During March, schools, local groups, and TV shows tell stories about amazing women from history. They show how women helped shape our world. They also talk about why women and men should have equal rights.

The month helps us remember the important things women did that history books often left out.
